Janet Brooks

1923 - 2023

On February 6th, Janet Eby Brooks transitioned peacefully from life at the age of 99, in the loving presence of her daughter Jennifer and grandson Eric at Lee Manor in Owen Sound. Janet, Jenny, or ‘Ma’ to her friends, siblings, nieces and nephews, kids and grandkids, was a delightfully smart, humorous and independent woman. . Importantly, she was a loving wife to her husband Gordon Brooks or “Gordie” (predeceased), mother to her 3 kids Phillip (Lori), Renee (Leigh), and Jennifer (Lance), grandmother to Kyle (Amelia), Holly (Michael), Stephanie (Matt), and Eric (Bronwyn), and great grandmother to Avery, Quinn, Arthur and Ingrid. Sister to David (Kelly) and Barney (predeceased). Janet was a proud nurse, who shared many stories of nursing in Montreal and across the United States where she worked and traveled with her husband as he worked as a highway engineer. Janet was most at home in the family cottage built by her parents on the shores of Lake Huron in Oliphant but found a home anywhere in nature: on camping trips with friends and family, paddling a canoe well into her eighties, and foraging for grasses, needles and barks to weave into baskets. She was known to have a little tune for every occasion and sang into her final days. Janet was the center of a big extended family, comprised of anybody who wanted to be a part of it. As a humble matriarch, she shaped a family culture that will endure in her absence: welcoming anyone and everyone to your family table with food and drink and a card game to share; creativity and art for the joy of doing it; always stopping to take in the sunset with a glass of wine; the sacred art of the skinny dip; any occasion being a good excuse to make a pie; doing it yourself and making things from scratch; and a love of mother earth. Janet will be missed but her expansive and spunky spirit lives on through all those who knew and loved her. There will be a Celebration of Life on her one hundredth birthday, August 16, 2023 at her beloved cottage. Donations to the Grey Sauble Conservation Authority would be greatly appreciated. Arrangements entrusted to the Thomas C. Whitcroft Funeral Home & Chapel, Sauble Beach (519) 422-0041. Condolences may be expressed online at www.whitcroftfuneralhome.com
