Tossa McFarlane

1971 - 2021

Tossa McFarlane, of Sooke, B.C., passed away peacefully, with family by her side at Grey Bruce Health Services, Owen Sound on Monday, Oct. 18, 2021. Tossa Alayne McFarlane in her 51st year. Devoted wife of Jody Gunter. Loving daughter of Jeanne and Glen McFarlane of Lion’s Head, Ontario. Dear sister to Thomas (partner Heather McCall) of Brampton. Sadly missed by aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Tossa was born on August 25, 1971 in London, Ontario and attended school in London, Oakville and Bright’s Grove; she completed high school in Sarnia and then received her ECE and PSW diplomas from Fanshawe College. She was a supply education assistant with the Lambton School Board, and also worked at Community Living. When Tossa was 13, she was diagnosed with diabetes, which later caused her kidneys to fail. Doctors suggested she have a kidney/pancreas transplant, and on January 13, 2004 she became the first person in Canada to receive this double transplant. This operation gave Tossa a wonderful new lease on life. Dr. Luke and Dr. McAllister performed the surgery within London Health Sciences Center’s multi-organ transplant program. In 2010, she moved to B.C. where she met Jody Gunter. They were married in 2016. Tossa’s love for life and her family and friends, was often expressed in her good-natured smile and infectious laugh - she was always enthusiastic and fun to be with. Tossa’s “children” were their three dogs - Kaus, Barclay, and Payton - all very well loved. Some of Tossa’s favorite pastimes involved adventures in B.C. in her yellow Jeep, spending summers at the family cottage on the Bruce Peninsula, fishing with her Dad and brother on Lake Huron, marshmallows and bonfires and music, especially listening and dancing to John Denver and the Grateful Dead. She shared her happy exuberance with many, and she will be sadly missed. Family wish to express their gratitude to the doctors and nursing staff of the Regional Hospital in Owen Sound. Cremation has taken place. Donations to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Canadian Diabetes Association would be appreciated. Condolences may be expressed online at www.whitcroftfuneralhome.com. A family memorial gathering will occur at the Thomas C. Whitcroft Peninsula Chapel, Wiarton to celebrate Tossa’s life.
